From gender roles to inequality, and everything in between, these themed stories help us to tackle tricky, larger-than-life questions from a fictional springboard. Gone are the days of only reading the words of old white males, and with these ten dynamic stories by black authors, my students get a chance to broaden their perspectives. “Police! Open up!” I chuckle darkly to myself before slipping into the shadows, waiting to prepare the next shipment.When it comes to short stories in my classroom, I try to make sure that all types of voices are represented. The banging on the wooden door snaps me out of my thoughts. The rest of her rotting and covered in flies, I had to leave her when she left.
I rush to the table where little sister´s body still lies, meat missing in most places, having already been prepared for shipment. I push open the door and throw myself inside, the smell of blood permeating the room. The fresh air hits me hard but I keep running, heading to the slaughterhouse. In a moment of desperation I flee from my hiding spot, dashing out the basement door, leading to the outside. They approach the basement door, I hear the rattling. They stomp around the small house, the one with the cedar floors mother adored, the one with the heights written on the cream doorjam. I run to the basement and hide in the old cupboard, quieting my breathing, praying they don’t hear. Mother went after, distraught over father’s loss. Next was father, he refused to let anyone else go before him.
She didn’t even struggle against our grip. The needs that they rattle the windows, bang the doors, and throw rocks at the walls for. All the others had fulfilled their needs, the needs they moaned, groaned, and screeched about. Now she’s stained the house crimson, the house father built for mother after they married. Maybe she would’ve stayed here, away from the outsiders, the ones who roamed.
Maybe I should’ve stopped her that day pulled her back by the arm, screamed her name, hell, even kissed her.
